Game #10: vs. Old Dominion (3/9/10 at 3PM)

Postby ToTheLeft » March 8th, 2010, 12:18 am

The Monarchs (8-5) come to town to try and ruin the Flames perfect record. More than your average mid-week game for LU.

No word on a starter yet, but I would speculate that Cam Giannini would be a candidate to get the nod.

ODU has only one game away from their 757 home this year, and lost to the school that almost took our football coach...

I don't know if it'll happen, but I'd like to see Dane and Chach get an inning each on Tuesday. They're both starting to really get healthy and both threw really well today.

I agree. If Dane gets control of the stuff he can throw, he'll be a great bullpen guy for us. He looked solid today.

And Chach is Chach. He's a real talent, and whatever needs to happen to get him ready to go for weekends in Big South play is what needs to happen.

was talking to PJ a little bit after the game today and he said that this game is deff going to be one of the toughest. ODU has had our number in the past and with a series against Del St. you get lulled into a sense of being on top of the world. The boys need to come out and play Tuesday night

Eh, tough in terms of being up for it, maybe. ODU isn't really that great, tho.

We beat UNCW at UNCW, and UNCW was voted 2nd with 2 1st place votes in the CAA. ODU was voted 4th, with no first place votes.

It might be tough to flip the switch and get ready for ODU, but I think we'll be ready, especially with "undefeated" being on the line.

yea, i dont think he meant they are tough as in they are one of the better teams we play, but tough in the sense that they have had our number and it never helps to go into a game like this after a cupcake series

I think he meant tough compared to the rest of the games on our schedule... After all the teams we have played are 16-32 and an average RPI of 198. ODU is 8-5 and beat Fordham(2-6, 2 wins coming against NYIT), Bucknell (5-5, 3 win sweep against powerhouse VMI), Mt. Saint Mary's(3-5, and beat Norfolk State along the way 2 games out of 3), and La Salle (1-5, only win was ODU).

Wind shouldn't be too much of a factor tomorrow, so we should see some bombs. Hopefully we can make up for the debacle in basketball.

Dane seems to be throwing really well. That's really good for us for him to get back to being healthy.

We got out coached and out effort-ed today... and the umps killed our final rally attempt.

Carter Browning came in at a time when we needed a guy like Beakler who will attack the zone and get outs. Carter has struggled all year, and to have him out there at a time when we needed someone to attack the batters was not the right move, IMO. Should have stuck with Dudley or gone to Beak...

Also, in the 9th, should have pinch run for Doug Bream... don't know how much it would have mattered on that last play, but it could have.

They threw a really good pitcher, we threw a freshman in his first start followed by a struggling bullpen arm... seems like we weren't playing for the win, and they wanted it a lot worse than we did.

Bad loss for our resume. Gotta hope they bail us out and have a good year.

My last post was "moderated", for some reason...

Anyways, they played like they wanted it, we played like we didn't. They threw a really, really good pitcher, we threw a freshman followed by the pitcher who's had the toughest time so far this year...

Gonna disagree with these two points.

Going into yesterday, no one expected Dane to throw like he did. We knew he'd get there at some point, but I don't think anyone knew it would be yesterday. Yesterday was the first time that he's thrown more than one time in a week in almost two years. We got a very pleasant surprise with him throwing that hard and his slider being that good, but I don't think anyone knew he was going to throw that well. I can get behind maybe putting someone in besides Carter, but I'm not 100% sure Dane is your guy in that situation.

As for running for Doug, I agreed with you in the heat of the moment. However, after I thought about it for a minute, I realized that Doug's run wasn't the run we needed to be running for. If you were going to put in a runner, you put them in for the tying or winning run. It wouldn't have mattered on that double play because the umpire flat out missed it. The second baseman knew he missed the bag because he tried to tag Doug (and missed). You don't try to tag the runner if you know you got the base. That one was on the umpire.

Edit: Crap, I got things mixed up. I thought Doug was the DH and Jeff was the left fielder. I got that mixed up. Knowing that, I can definitely get behind running for Doug there because you're putting Kenneth in for defense if you tie the game anyway.

even without the double play they still got Jeff out at first correct? so from there Doug would have scored on Mike Rob's hit and that brings Wimmer up with 1 on and down 5-4 but with only 1 out.... granted Wimmer has yet to find his bat so i don't know how that would have gone, but it is still a much different game nonetheless

Carter has had a tough time of it this year for sure.In early december he was diagnosed with swine flu ,which morphed into mono in early January. He missed practices because there is danger of a spleen rupture when one has mono via physical exertion. He dropped almost 25 lbs.

No one wanted to do better job of pitching than did Carter himself.I'm sure he is as disappointed as anyone.

Here's hoping that Carter's health returns and that his confidence comes back so that he can help the team down the stretch. In the meantime, let's hope the rest of the pitching staff picks up the slack , the offense keeps producing, and that the Flames have a great season this year.

In the interview we did with him this morning, Coach Toman talked about Carter getting the flu in the fall. He said that they've gotta get him in the bullpen and get him back to how he was last year. Hopefully in the coming weeks we can get a blowout game where we can throw him in there and work the kinks out. He'll get back to where he was. It just takes time.
